SYNOPSIS

Based on the book "When Mexicans Could Play Ball" by Ignacio M. Garcia, this film follows the improbable journey of the Sidney Lanier High School Voks, a team of Mexican American kids from San Antonio's barrios, as they defy all odds to win the 1943 state basketball championship.Coached by the strict but caring Nemo Herrera, these undersized but scrappy players must overcome inferior facilities, biased referees, hostile crowds, and constant scrutiny over their eligibility. Yet despite the challenges of WWII, fallen teammates, and impending military service, they play their hearts out, fueled by their love for the game and the values instilled by their community.Nemo teaches them an aggressive, trapping style of play that capitalizes on their speed and tenacity. But as they fight through the tournament, facing racism and even violence, the players and Nemo are forced to confront what it truly means to be Mexican American. It takes the spirited teacher Alice Treviño to help them embrace their identity with pride. In their ultimate triumph, the Voks don't just win a championship—they learn that success doesn't require demeaning their opponents. It's a powerful story of perseverance, unity, and finding one's place in society against all odds.
